What is Motmot?

Motmot is a free bird-identification training app. It helps birders learn to recognise species through photo, video and sound quizzes, personalised practice and country challenges. You can sign in with Google so Motmot can create your account and save your scores and learning progress.

How Motmot teaches

1

Play a quiz

Pick your level: start easy with distinctive birds, or go hard with rare lookalikes.

2

Review your answers

See more photos of your answer and of the right bird. A comparison explains how the two species differ.

3

Learn what you missed

After a few games, the species you get wrong most appear in My Tricky Birds. There you can play quizzes on just those birds and pairs.

What you can play

Motmot is built around different ways to train. Pick a short custom quiz, grind a country list, race survival, compete in the national league, play with a flock, or drill the species you keep missing.

Photos, sounds and video

Normal quizzes

Play a single game with full control: difficulty, length, and optionally a taxonomic family. Stick to photos, or switch to sound or video when you want another style of practice.

Start a quiz

Multiplayer. A live quiz for two or more players. Faster correct answers score more points—great for a desk duel or a club night.

Start a live quiz

Shared games. Invite friends to play the very same quiz, each on their own time. Everyone has 3 days—or whatever limit you set—and then you compare scores.

Learn a whole country

Country Challenge

Study the birds of one country from start to finish. It begins quite easy, but as you progress through levels things get tougher—be warned, the end is really tough.

Compete with your country

National League

Compete against other birders from your country. You play one daily quiz that starts easy and finishes harder. There is a daily winner and a weekly champion—this is the real competition.

Play with friends

Flocks

Play with a group of fellow birders in a small competition. You get one shared game each week, and every member has the entire week to complete it.

Fix your weak spots

My Tricky Birds

After you have played some games, open Difficult species to see what you miss most and which pairs you mix up a lot. Play focused quizzes to close those gaps in your birding knowledge.

Practise difficult birds

One life

Survival

A quick game, always at Pro level—so rarities are included too. One wrong answer and you are out. See if you can set a nice record for your country.
